Where do I even begin?
2017 has definitely gone by fast. Real fast. It feels like I was just starting my final term of my undergrad at the beginning of the year, and here I am now at the end of 2017. Living in a completely new city. Studying in a new school. Aspiring a whole new field of career. Surrounded by new group of friends.
It’s crazy to think how the year can take one person from a pathway leading somewhere to another pathway leading elsewhere. It’s crazy to think how the year can transform someone from an old version of oneself to one who is better (and stronger) than one was at the beginning of the year. It’s crazy to think how the year can contain so much memories – the good, the bad, and everything in between – that we all can cherish and learn from for the rest of our lives. And well, it’s crazy to think how the year can bring in a new perspective on life and prepare us for the year ahead of us.
2017 was not an easy year for me, but it sure was a fruitful one. Lots of lessons, tons of memories, heaps of joy, and everything else. As we are approaching the end of the year, I would like to share with you all one lesson I learned throughout the year.
Life is full of unexpected interruptions.
If you ask me at the beginning of the year what my post-graduation plans were, I would probably tell you I’m heading back home to Jakarta and look for some engineering-related jobs. But it seems like somewhere along the way, I encountered a major unexpected interruption that allows me to experience a whole new adventure – London. Right there and then, I realized life is full of unexpected interruptions that catch us off guard, be it big or small. Interruptions can come in many form – rejections, broken things, devastating news, unpleasant illness, life-changing circumstances, major decision, you name it. They may seem random, but I’d like to believe they are nothing close to some random events and rather, something that is divinely placed in our path. For a reason.
I learned that I don’t have life figured out. And I thank God that I don’t. Even though these life experiences seem like unexpected events to me, I know that these major changes are never a surprise to Him – it has always been this way all along. As I enter the new year, I am welcoming all God’s interruptions in my life – interruptions of grace. Though it may not turn out the way I want it to, I believe that these interruptions can take me to places I have never imagined before.
I’m thankful for God’s enabling grace that has carried me throughout the year, and am confident that this same grace will carry me through the upcoming year. Surprise me, Lord, with your divine interventions and interruptions. Let me experience You in a brand new way – in ways I have never experienced before.
As we stand at the last few hours of 2017, let’s look back, reflect, and be grateful for everything that passed. Let’s look forward to the new year, and get ready for the unexpected. May we plan well, but acknowledge that nothing is ever set in stone. Interruptions will happen, life can take you on another route, but take it for what it is – those interruptions are divinely placed.
Here’s to all who came out of 2017 strong – you’re a rock star.
Here’s to all who came out of 2017 crippling – you don’t have to go through it alone; we got this.
Here’s to all who had a joyous year – spread your joy around.
Here’s to all who had a tough year – you are tougher; keep your head up.
Here’s to all who dreamed and succeeded – I’m happy for you; dream bigger and stay humble.
Here’s to all who dreamed but failed – interruptions happen; stand up again, and again, and again.
Here’s to all who lost their loved ones – mourn, but mourn well; you are not alone.
Here’s to all who were hurt – we are all imperfect humans; look to the perfect One.
Here’s to all who are afraid – you don’t need to have it altogether; take one step forward.
Here’s to all who lost their hopes – it’s not over; Hope is alive.
Here’s to all who get to love – it’s a beautiful thing, isn’t it? Love hard.
And to all who are loved – cherish them while you can; life on Earth is not forever.
Here’s to all who stuck by me all throughout – I thank God for you every day; each one of you.
Here’s to all who believed in me – thank you; I won’t be where I am today without you.
Here’s to all who pushed me hard – I needed it more than you know; keep pushing.
Here’s to all who lent a helping hand – I am forever grateful.
Here’s to all who loved despite my weaknesses – I thank God for loving me through you.
Here’s to the new year – the best is yet to come.
2018. Bring it.
Wishing you and your family a joyous year ahead of you. You are up for another roller coaster ride – but trust me, it’ll be a good one! That’s a wrap, 2017! Have a fruitful new year, folks.
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
His mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is Your faithfulness”
